STATEMENT ISSUED BY PUBLIC RELATIONS AND PRESS SERVICE OF “AZERENERJI” JSC

According to the latest information from the Central Dispatcher Service of the Joint-Stock Company on the accident occurred on July 3, 2018, at 00:20, at the 330 kV substation of the “Azerbaijan” TPP, turning into a system accident and elimination of its consequences as soon as possible:
“The 1-phase short circuit has turned into a 3-phase short circuit, and instantly the 7 power blocks (1500 MW) that are in operation at the Azerbaijan TPP have been disconnected from the relay protection. Due to the great power shortage (in the amount of 50% of the demand), Azerbaijan's power system has been disconnected from the Russian power system because of the impact of the counter-accident automation in the first second of the accident.
In the pre-accident regime, 1000 MW out of 1500 MW power produced at Azerbaijan TPP was transmitted to meet the needs of Baku and Absheron. In the first seconds of the accident, 330 kV backbone 1st Absheron transmission line at the “Mingachevir-Absheron” transmission corridor has been disconnected from the relay protection as a result of the collapse of the current transformer at the Azerbaijan TPP and 550 kV 2nd Absheron transmission line from asynchronous process override automation, and despite operating system counter-accident automation, great active and reactive power shortage and sudden occurrence of the accident have led to the widespread accident and the complete power outage. As a result of the urgent operative measures, the power system restoration has been realized and using existing generation power, the electricity supply has been restored firstly to the vital facilities and later, upon the restoration of the generation power to the other consumers”.
The head of state has taken direct control of the accident.
All resources have been mobilized to remove the country's power system from the emerging situation and to eliminate the consequences of the accident, and the power system has switched to emergency mode.
As a result of the rapid response given in a short time, consumers fed by “Azerenerji” JSC have been supplied with the electricity of 100%.
Currently, the stable operation of the power system and reliable electricity supply of the republic are fully provided. Electricity imports from the Georgian power system have been stopped, and transmission of electricity is carried out based on the agreed schedule in a parallel working regime with the Russian power system.
Relevant technical measures are being taken to restore the equipment damaged and control and communication cables broken-down in the accident at the 330 kV substation of “Azerbaijan” TPP.
