President Ilham Aliyev attended opening of “Azerenerji” JSC’s “Jahangirbayli” Hydro Power Plant

On September 28, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has attended the inauguration of the Jahangirbayli” Hydro Power Plant of the “Azerenerji” JSC.
President of “Azerenerji” JSC Baba Rzayev informed the Head of State about the works carried out in the plant.
It should be noted that in accordance with President Ilham Aliyev’s Order regarding the creation of new “green energy” potential in the territories liberated from occupation, “Azerenerji” JSC started the construction of a series of hydro power plants (HPP) in the fall of 2022 with a total capacity of 42 megawatts, each 10.5 megawatts, at four locations in the area, where Okhchuchay is passing through Zangilan district.
The works at “Sarigishlaq”, “Shayifli” and “Zangilan” HPPs are being completed, while construction of “Jahangirbayli” HPP has been finished.
It was noted that the engine room built for “Jahangirbayli” HPP, two 5.25 megawatts European-manufactured green certified Francis eco-turbines, generators, and remotely controlled digital equipment were installed. The power plant will generate more than 30 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
The Head of State launched the “Jahangirbayli” Hydroelectric Power Plant.
The 42-megawatt “Zangilan” Hydro Power Plants series, which was inspected by President Ilham Aliyev during its construction in May of this year, is the first major power generation project to be newly built in the territories liberated from occupation. This project was completed in record time - only one year. So far, hydro power plants in this number, in this capacity and in this period have not been built either in Azerbaijan, either in other countries. In order to supply these four power plants with water, “Azerenerji” JSC built a main water intake facility at a height of 600 meters above sea level. With a width of 450 meters and a length of 250 meters, the water capacity of the facility is 400-450 thousand cubic meters. The creation of this facility, in addition to power generation, is a very important event in terms of agriculture and ecology. The construction of the main water intake will help to clean up the riverbed polluted for 30 years and revive the flora and fauna.
35 percent of the river's water was kept in its channel from the main intake, and double derivation pipes were built at a distance of 23 kilometers. The water coming out of the pipe is released back into the river again. More than 8 thousand trees were planted around the “Jahangirbeyli” HPP.
The Head of State launched the “Jahangirbayli” Hydro Power Plant.
It should be noted that open public hearings were held in connection with the construction of the HPPs on Okhchuchay organized by the State Environmental Expertise Agency and with the participation of relevant government agencies, the media and non-governmental organizations, and the project was highly appreciated.
The 370 megawatt HPPs built by “Azerenerji” JSC on the rivers with higher level of water in the areas liberated from occupation and to be built in the future are three times less than the 1060 megawatt HPPs located on the rivers with lower level of water in other parts of the country both in terms of number and power, however, these HPPs will generate more energy. Thus, unlike the power plants in other parts of the country, the new power plants built mainly on the fast-flowing mountain rivers with lower level of water in Azerbaijan operates efficiently even when the water level decreases.
So, although the production volume drops to 25-30 percent in August-September, it is above 80 percent in April-May, and operates at an average of 40-42 percent capacity in all seasons of the year. In other HPPs, the performance capacity is 10-12 percent.
Therefore, more than 130 million kilowatt-hours of “green energy” will be generated in “Zangilan” hydro power plants series consisting of 4 newly built power plants in the territories liberated from occupation. This is an important contribution to the implementation of President Ilham Aliyev's order to turn the region into a “Green Energy” zone by playing a huge role in the transition to renewable energy sources. In addition to contributing to the energy and economic development of the region, the project of a series of HPPs is also significant in terms of employment of the population.
