“Azerenerji” JSC and BP ink MoU on electrification of Sangachal terminal

Image Another step was taken to reduce carbon emissions. “Azerenerji” JSC and BP, as the operator of the Sangachal terminal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on February 20. According to the document, the Parties will work together to develop a technical solution for a project involving the electrification of the Sangachal terminal. Cooperation in the direction of determining the total scope of work on the “Sangachal Terminal electrification project” (STEP) and sharing this volume between “Azerenerji” JSC and the operator of the Sangachal terminal is planned. The parties will also work together to negotiate the detailed technical design and commercial framework of the project to clarify the scope of work. These issues are the main elements in determining the commercial efficiency of the project. If the STEP project succeeds, combustion of fuel gas used to power the world-class Sarajevo terminal will be stopped and will be supplied with energy from the state energy system of Azerbaijan. More accurately, after the implementation of the project called “Sangachal Terminal electrification project” (STEP), the power supply of the Sangachal Terminal, a world-class facility, will be supplied by BP through the transmission of electricity generated at the 240 MW “Shafag” Solar Power Plant, which will be built in Jabrayil district, to the state power system of Azerbaijan. If the power produced at the “Shafag” Solar Power Plant is lacking for the supply of Sangachal Terminal, the power supply of the terminal will be provided by “Azerenerji” JSC. According to the President of “Azerenerji” JSC Baba Rzayev, Azerbaijan has chosen the priority of accelerating the transition to alternative and renewable energy sources, reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere and other progressive principles. Also, by declaring 2024 the “Year of Solidarity for the Green World”, consecutive steps are being taken in Azerbaijan within the framework of the socio-economic development strategy for 2022-2026, as well as in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. “In accordance with the strategy of Mr. President Ilham Aliyev, numerous result-oriented measures have been taken regarding the expansion of the green energy sector and the reduction of harmful substances released into the atmosphere. The Memorandum of Understanding signed today will also contribute to the goal of reduction of carbon dioxide.”
